Mrs Doris S. Simpson
April 11, 1927 ~ September 29, 2024 (age 97)
Doris Simmons Simpson, 97, of the Village at Brookwood, Burlington, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Mrs. Simpson was born April 11, 1927 in Caswell County, NC. She was the wife of 63 years to the late Henry H. Simpson, Jr. and the daughter of John and Mamie Miles Simmons, both deceased.
Doris was a graduate of Anderson High School and attended Woman’s College now known as UNC Greensboro. She volunteered at her daughter, Rhonda’s school, Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary and Western High School, active in the PTA and other school activities. After Rhonda left for college, she went to work with AT&T, retiring after 15 years to enjoy her new grandson, Bradley in 1994. Doris was a charter member of the Alamance County Hospital Auxiliary (now Alamance Regional), helped to organize the Altamahaw-Ossipee Kindergarten which was prior to kindergarten in public schools, past member of the American Red Cross Volunteer program through which she helped organize and help in the school health room, charter member of “the canasta group” which remained active for more than 50 years, and member of the Hoe & Hope Garden Club.
Doris was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church where she was active in The United Methodist Women. She also served on the Altar Guild. She was a previous member of Berea Christian Church where she served on the Board of Deacons, and taught Sunday School and Bible School.
Doris was a gracious and humble woman. She lived a Christian life through serving God and others every day. She was so thankful for her large, extended family and many friends. Her love and dedication for her immediate family of Henry (June), Rhonda, David and Bradley were beyond measure. Doris loved to work in the yard at her home and in the garden on their farm. Many have enjoyed the fruits of her labor.
The family is forever grateful to Cassandra Love for her care, friendship, and love for Doris during the past year.
Survivors include her daughter, Rhonda Youngdahl and husband David of Greensboro and grandson, Bradley Simpson Youngdahl of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle (Preston) Allred, Eva (Gray) Coble, and Sue (Herbert) Brooks and brothers, Edgar (Mary) Simmons, Doake (Frances) Simmons, Claude (Naomi) Simmons, and Earl (Margaret) Simmons. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law Bill (Mary) Simpson, and Dr. Richard (Tandy) Simpson and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Friday, October 4, at Rich & Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington. A service of committal will be held for close family and friends at Pine Hill Cemetery prior to the service. The memorial service will be conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 5, at 12 noon with Rev. Stephan Margeson officiating.
