OBITUARIES Mr. William J. Leath
    GREENSBORO — Mr. William J. Leath, 89, of 218 South Park Drive, a loving father and devoted husband, died at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Wesley Long Hospital after a critical illness of one week. He was a former resident of Burlington.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Jeffreys Leath, who survives, and the son of the late William Lafayette Leath and Swannie Tapscott Leath. An innovator in the hosiery industry, he was the President of Leath, McCarthy, and Maynard, where he was a friend to all employees and worked at all levels of the business. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
    Mr. Leath was a graduate of Lenior-Rhyne College and the recipient of the 1995 Founders Society 2000 Award. He was a U.S. Navy Lieutenant serving from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers, where he received the President’s Outstanding Leadership Award and received the Knitting Industry-Magazine Award of Achievement. He was named Burlington Kiwanis Citizen of the Year in 1970. He was a member of The Century Club of the Boy Scouts of America (Cherokee Council), and was the recipient of the 2002 Boy Scouts Award. He was a Patriots of America member, a member of Lees-McCrae College President’s Club, and a life member of the North Carolina Zoological Society. He was the YMCA President from 1969 to 1970, and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He also served on the local Board of Directors at Wachovia Bank for many years. He was an avid golfer, with a low handicap.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Jim Leath and wife, Angie, of Greensboro, Mr. Cliff Leath and wife, Lynn, of Chapel Hill, and Mr. Jeff Leath and wife, Patti, of Charleston, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington by the Rev. Dr. Ronald Shive.
    A reception will be held at the Alamance Country Club to greet family and friends following the memorial service.
