Obituary Online notes for Minnie Elizabeth PERKINS
ELIZABETH PERKINS BARROW October 1, 1920 - October 11, 2013 Elizabeth Perkins Barrow, beloved wife of RADM Winford W. Barrow, entered into eternal rest October 11, 2013, at the age of 93. Elizabeth Perkins was born in Reidsville, North Carolina, youngest of the nine children of Robert and Minnie Perkins. After graduating from Woman's College in Greensboro, NC, she declined an offer to work for a fashion designer in New York and returned to Reidsville to teach biology and home economics at Reidsville High School. In 1945 Elizabeth married the love of her life, Winford Welborn Barrow, upon his graduation from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. From that time until his retirement she followed the military spouse's lifestyle, making a home for the family at each new assignment and raising three daughters. She never taught formally again, but led Scout groups, church groups, school and community activities wherever the family settled. While her husband was Commander of the 8th Coast Guard District in New Orleans she spearheaded the effort to have a community center built for neighborhood youth - a project for which she was awarded a commendation. Elizabeth's talents included professional quality home decoration, flower arranging, and dress-making. She also had a positive genius for organization, reflected in the daily diaries she kept for over seventy years. She loved dancing, games, birthdays, holidays, and all celebrations. Most especially she loved people. She was a devoted "people watcher," an enthusiastic hostess, and a faithful supporter of her church and community. Her marriage to her husband and best friend Winford was a powerful witness to others of the faith and love they shared for 68 years. She will be greatly missed by her husband, her daughters Elizabeth, Ruth, and Mary, their husbands, 12 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The family is thankful for the support of Annandale United Methodist Church and Capital Caring Hospice who so greatly blessed us throughout this difficult time. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on October 20 at the Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on October 21 at the Annandale United Methodist Church. Burial services will be performed at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
