Mr. John “Jack” S. Wood Jr.
HIGH POINT — Mr. John “Jack” S. Wood Jr., 80, a resident of 1907 Apt. O, N.
Centennial St., went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the
Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center.
Mr. Wood was born October 21, 1921 in Greensboro, N.C., to the late John
Smith Wood Sr. and Theresa York Wood and the late Annie Turner Wood,
stepmother. He retired from Newman Machine Company as a machinist and
was active in the local Farm Bureau. John worked with bees for many years
and enjoyed putting up honey. He was active in the Guilford Beekeepers
Association and held the office of president at one point. John was a longtime
member of Rolling Roads Church of the Nazarene in Greensboro, where he
sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and served on the church board. While
at the Church of the Nazarene, he also held various jobs in the church on the
state level.
In 1994 he transferred his membership to First Wesleyan Church in High Point,
where he helped lead a care group for eight years, sang in the Golden Tones,
ushered, and was active in visitation of the elderly. On January 25, 1947, he
married the late Juanita P. Wood. They were married for 55 years. He was also
a World War II U.S. Naval Reserve veteran.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carol Thompson and husband, Mike, of
Gibsonville and Mrs. Marsha Gray and husband, Tom, of Greensboro; one
son, Mr. Darryl Wood and wife, Beth, of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren,
Crystal Cole and husband, Tommy, of Elon, Nicole and Taylor Wood of
Nashville; three great-grandchildren, Bethany, Chelsea and Alex of Elon; one
brother, Frank Wood of Delaware; two sisters, Kathryn Meadows of Hawaii and
Nancy McClintock of Pleasant Garden; a stepbrother, James Turner. In
addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a half brother,
Parks Wood; a half sister, Pauline Kirkman; two infant brothers; a stepsister,
Mary Frances Ward; and two stepbrothers, Chester Turner and William
Turner.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Wesleyan Church by the
Rev. Scott Weldon and the Rev. James Smith. Interment will follow at
Westminster Gardens Cemetery in Greensboro.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cumby Family Funeral
Service of High Point.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Wesleyan Church
Building Fund for Future Generations, 1915 N. Centennial St., High Point, N.C.
