Obituary Online notes for Anne Elizabeth DUNCAN
Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Duncan Harviel died January 14, 2010, after a long and faithful life. Born in Macon, North Carolina, on February 14, 1911, she was the middle child in a family of 10 children. Before she started school, her parents James William Duncan and Mary Finch Duncan moved to rural Craven County, where her father farmed. After graduating from Fort Barnwell High School, she attended Chester Hospital School of Nursing in Chester, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1935. She received post-graduate surgical nurse's training at Long Island Medical College in New York City, New York.
Her career as a Registered Nurse included working at Sternberger's Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina, Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, North Carolina, and as an Industrial Nurse for Cone Mills in Reidsville. In Burlington she worked at both Memorial and County Hospitals, although she served primarily as a private duty nurse.
Mrs. Harviel was preceded in death by her husband Jay C. Harviel, who died in June of 1972, and by her older son Dr. Jay Duncan Harviel, who died in April of 2002.
She is survived by her son Ernest J. Harviel and his wife Jolete and their two daughters, Jennifer Jolete Harviel of Nashville, Tennessee, and Carrie Elizabeth Harviel of Columbia, South Carolina.
She is also survived by Duncan's wife Robin Harviel of Boise, Idaho, and their two daughters, Jennifer Krolow and husband Mark and daughter Grace Gilroy of Nigeria and Claire Buck and husband Matt of Denver, Colorado.
Lib Harviel is survived by 17 nieces and nephews. Known as Aunt Annie, she was very close and proud of all of her nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be in the Board Room at the First Presbyterian Church on West Davis Street in Burlington on Sunday, January 17, 2010, from 1 until 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Williams Chapel at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at the Alamance Memorial Park.
