George Elbridge Boswell dies at 100
   BURLINGTON — George Elbridge Boswell, 100 years and nine months, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at Liberty Commons after three and a half months of failing health.

   He was born in Caswell County to the late William Lafayette “Fett” and Rosa Lee Rudd Boswell and was married to the late Grace Page Boswell.

   He retired from Annedeen Hosiery Mill after 23 years of service and was a member of Pleasant Grove Civitan Club, where he had been named “Civitan of the Year.” Mr. Boswell was a member of Kerr’s Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Seniors Sunday School Class and was honored with the title of Lifetime Deacon for his many years of faithful service to the church.

   Elbridge was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Division of Engineers in the 1st Army under General George Patton. He was awarded four Bronze Service Stars while serving in the European Theatre, mainly for seeing action in the Battle of the Ardennes, also known as the Battle of the Bulge, and the occupation of Germany for fi ve months after the war.

   He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Jean C. (Vernon) Garrison, Harold (Janell) Madren, Clyde (Pat) Madren, Larry (Cheryl) Madren, Jack (Glenda) Madren, Faye (Wayne) Apple, Kay (Carl) Wrenn, Wylline (Earl) Garrison, Bobby (Velma) Gilliam, Freddie (Peggy) Gilliam, Sara (Fred) Faucette, Wanda (Blake) Jones, Bill (Lois) Boswell, Loretta (Daniel) Madren, Judy Boswell, Janice Whitlatch, Sheila (Andy) Carmen, Connie (Bobby) Blythe, Jim (Jan) Boswell, Carol King and Mary King; greatnieces, Susan Oakley, Lee Willetts and Robyn Myrick; greatnephews, Terry King, Randall King, Rocky King, Craig King, Ricky King and Sheree Crutchfi eld; two special great-great-nephews, Kaden and Liam Raftery.

   He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sisters, Myrtle Madren, Florence Matkins, and Frances Gilliam; brothers, Alton, Aubrey, John and James Boswell; nieces and nephews, Willa Jean Webster, Ervin King, Bill King and Robert King; and great-nephew, Lynn Crutchfield.

   The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kerr’s Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman Harris, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

   The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times at the home of Jean Garrison.
