Obituary Online notes for “Hoolie” Hilda Graham ROBERTS
GREENSBORO - Hoolie G. Norman was our mother; there were four of us, Lane, Rob, Dean and George. She passed away on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Well Spring Retirement Community. She was born in Alamance County, but moved with her family to Salisbury at an early age. She was a graduate of Catawba College.

Hoolie loved us all and our friends just like they were her own. The door was always open and our yard was the neighborhood playground. She would keep a watchful eye on all who visited and played there. She scolded, supporting with caring love and affection for all.

She had many friends, everyone loved Hoolie. She would always share the most, friendly little smile that would capture you in a moment. You just felt attached to her when you were with her.

When we grew older and married our spouses Jim, Carol, Laura and Cathy all became her children too! She loved us all equally always wanting to know how and what we were doing and wanting the best for each of us.

In the early years Hoolie was an avid golfer. She won many awards but it was the personal accomplishment and the comradery with the other players that she loved. Hoolie was the golf Champion at Greensboro Country Club and Carlson Farms. She was a much better golfer than her husband George, but golf was a competitive and social event for Hoolie and she relished the time with George, friends and competitors on the course.

Hoolie was very active in the Greensboro Community. She served as President of The Cone Hospital Auxiliary, Past member of the Board of Directors, Cone Hospital, past President of the Greensboro Debutante Club, past Board Member of Hospice of Greensboro, past President of Greensboro Assembly, member of Greensboro Cotillion, Greensboro Country Club, member of Founder's Society, Duke University, Endowed Scholarships at Greensboro College and Duke University.

Her love for our father George for the 38 years they were together and the 25 years after his death was the cornerstone of her life. They were two lovebirds, though very discreet that were always showing their affection of each other. Their vow of "In sickness and health, till death do us part" bound them together till George took his last breath. Afterward, Hoolie became the cornerstone of the family. Always even keeled, she stepped out to assume the role as matriarch of the family, keeping the family together and sharing her love with each of us always.

When tragedy struck with the premature death of son Rob, Hoolie's fortitude helped the family pull together sharing the grief and showing the resolve to move on. A terrible loss of a son was a blow to the family that no parent should have to endure but she rose above it with great courage.

As time moved on, she moved to Wellspring settling into a life style that suited her. With many friends living there as well she was able to see them and keep those relationships active. Through the years she remained sharp as a tack. She was always ready to share a story of her past or earlier years. She remembered everything that had happened in her 95 years on this earth and could tell you about it all.

Hoolie was preceded in death by her husband George E. Norman Jr., son Vernon R. Norman, brother, Joe Roberts. Surviving are her children; Lane Harris of Bozeman, MT, George E. Norman III of Pinehurst, NC and Dean Norman of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren; Graham Harris, Jim Harris (Mary Pat), Deidre Norman, Robert Norman, Stewart Norman (Amanda), Dean Norman Jr., and Sally Norman.
