 ELON — George Roy Saunders, 84, of Westbrook Avenue, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Alamance Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.
 
 A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Leonard Eugene and Mary Ella Danieley Saunders. He retired from the City of Burlington as assistant superintendent of the street department with over 30 years of service. Following his retirement, he pursued his passion of horse training. During that time he won the World Championship with three different horses. He was a member of Lakeview Community Church.
 
 Survivors include his wife, Betty Gross Saunders, of the home; daughters, Deborah Saunders of Gibsonville and Vickie Neal Saunders of Burlington; son, Jeffrey “Jeff” Saunders and wife Laura of Burlington; grandson, Shane Cartner and wife Candy of Portsmouth, Va.; and greatgrandson, Jackson Cartner; sisters, Annie C. Woody and husband Carl, Bessie Lassiter and husband Currie Lee, Sara Underwood, Maggie Satterfield, Barbara Ann Thompson and husband Sam and Peggy Pickard, all of Burlington; brother, Bobby Saunders and wife Glenda of Burlington; and aunt, Ava Ferguson; sister-inlaw, Barbara Saunders; and brother-in-law, Jim Baker.
 
 He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard Eugene “Junior” Saunders Jr.; and a sister, Louise Baker.
 
 Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gerald Sanders and the Rev. Reid Dickens. Interment will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. Mr. Saunders will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory through the funeral service.
 
 The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday and at other times at the home.
