A great Southern lady claimed her place in Heaven early on the morning of Feb. 13, 2003.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, in the chapel of First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, following a private interment at Westminster Gardens. The Reverend James Doster Burton will officiate.
During her 97 years among us she was many things to many people--dutiful daughter, loving sister, devoted wife, wonderful mother, nurturing grandmother, doting great-grandmother, special aunt, true friend, teacher, confidant, and cheerleader.
Born Jan. 5, 1906, in Glenwood, to Dr. Thomas Lee Doster and Etta Simmons Doster, she spent her formative years in Blacksburg, S.C. and Greenville, S.C. where she graduated from high school and from Furman University in 1928. After teaching in Belmont for several years, she returned to Blacksburg to teach and to care for her widowed mother. It was there that she met and married Watson Stoessel Fox in 1936. Their only child, Watson Stoessel Fox, Jr., was born in 1941.
In 1947 the family moved to Greensboro and opened Fox Cleaners. Mary Lewis immediately became immersed in the community--teaching Sunday school at First Baptist Church and taking an active role in the garden club, book club, sewing club, WMU, UDC, DAR, and PTA. Her first husband was known to often comment that her tombstone would read, "Here lies Mary Lewis. She was 'clubbed' to death." Her love of people continued until her death as she remained active in the UDC, DAR, and several bridge groups, and taught Sunday school well into her 90's. Watson Stoessel Fox, Sr., preceded her in death in 1967.
In 1972 she married James Buchanan Danieley, a widower she met at a hockey game--another one of her loves. Mary Lewis and Buck had a wonderful 10 years together until his death in 1982. Due to her marriage to Buck, she became and has remained an integral part of the Danieley family, who embraced her as she embraced them.
Grandchildren began to arrive in 1969 and were a constant joy to Mary Lewis, who was always available to pick them up from school for a trip to Hardees before playing games or making something special in her kitchen. She was an especially important influence in their lives due to the untimely death of their mother in 1991.
Mary Lewis's love of and for people resulted in her having a lasting impact on all who came to know her. Her door was always open, there was always room for another place at her table, and she always had time to listen. She herself attributed her long life and good health to a positive attitude, which she recommended to all. She will be greatly missed but remembered by all for her welcoming smile and love of life.
She is survived by her son, Sto Fox; grandchildren, Ashley Fox Thompson, Greg Fox, Brandon Fox, Lindsey Fox Beane, and Brie Fox; great-grandchildren, Makenzie and Ella Thompson and Demetrius Butler; step-son, Jim Danieley; step-grandchildren, Sandy and Cathy Danieley, Chris Kinyoun, and Sharon Perper; step-great-granddaughter Caley Perper; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins; countless adopted grandchildren; and scores of friends.
