NEW BERN - Joe Michael "Mike" Florence, 61, died May 8, 2010, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
Mike loved fishing and his 1955 Chevy "Two Lane Black Top" custom edition. He taught heating and air conditioning for 12 years at Alamance Community College, and for the last 17 years he has worked as the director of maintenance for Craven County Schools. He also taught 31 years of life experience to his children. Mike was a member of Florence Memorial Baptist Church in Mebane and he proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a devoted family man and was a special "Poppy" to his grandchildren. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sue of the home; two children, Benjamin Michael Florence of Greensboro and Emily Florence Speight of Bridgeton; his parents, the Rev. James L. Florence Sr. and Margaret Hall Florence of Mebane; and three grandchildren, Lillian Grace, Codie Gray and Colton Christopher Speight. Mike is also survived by his brothers, Jim Florence and wife Kathy of Efland, and Bruce R. Florence and wife Lisa of Anderson; his sister Melody Parker of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. 470, Joe Michael Florence-
