Winfred  Leon "Wink" Johnson 

    GIBSONVILLE — Winfred  Leon "Wink" Johnson , age 86, of 3723 Gilliam Church Road, died on Thursday, January 12, 2006, at the Hospice Home. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 54 years to Sylvia Ellen Patterson Johnson , who survives.

    Wink retired from Daniel’s Construction Company, where he was part of the construction of the Dome on the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. Wink served as a Torpedoman’s Mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II improving the effectiveness of the torpedo for combat. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the 1st. Burlington Ward and he served as a counselor in the Bishopric and he was a High Priest. Wink enjoyed reading various types of books and spending time with his family.

    Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Ellen Patterson Johnson  of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Johnson  "PJ" Franklin and Roberta Johnson  Helmsin, both of Wilmington, N.C., Linda Johnson  Bell and her husband, James, of Burlington, Sheryl Johnson  Long and her husband, Wayne, of Granmble, South Carolina; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Lee "Bo" Johnson  and his wife, Burgess, of Wilmington, N.C. and Kendall Wade Johnson  and his wife, Tracey, of Gibsonville; 12 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Grace Allen Braxton of Mebane, N.C.

    Wink was preceded in death by his parents, William Amick and Grace Darlin Long Johnson ; sisters, Sadie Davis, Christine Buckner and Edith Smith; brothers, Donald, Garland, Kenneth and Jake Johnson .

    The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1st. Burlington Ward by Bishop Mike Doyle, and the burial will follow at Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

The U.S. Navy will provide military honors at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and other times at the home.
