John Lacy Smith
    BURLINGTON — John Lacy Smith, 82, of 1880 Brookwood Ave., died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 at Heritage Place of The Village of Brookwood.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Ubert and Verdie Faucette Smith. He served in the 995th Engineering division in WWII. After completing his service, he attended Elon College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He taught school in Rockingham County for three years before joining Western Electric where he worked in personnel and served as a contract administrator. After 28 years, he retired from Lucent Technologies.
    Mr. Smith was active in the Civitan Club of Altamahaw-Ossipee, serving as president at one time. He was a member of Camp Springs United Methodist Church where he held numerous positions in service to his church.
    Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Evelyn King Smith; a daughter, Karon Smith Matkins of Burlington; a son, Ronald Coleman Smith and wife, Carol of Burlington; four grandchildren, Dr. Jay Matkins and wife, Dr. Preeti Matkins of Charlotte; Brett Matkins and wife, Karol of Rowayton, Conn., and Jessica Smith and Emma Smith, both of Burlington; three greatgrandchildren, Jack, Katie and Landon Matkins; and three sisters, Helene Whitesell of Elon, Louise Pender of Mebane, and Margaret Barber of Gibsonville.
    He was preceded in death by one brother, Mitchell Smith.
    The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 this evening at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington.
    The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Camp Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
