Audrey Alcon Wyrick

GIBSONVILLE — Mrs. Audrey Ellen Alcon Wyrick died at the Hospice Home on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, after a month of declining health. She was 90 years old.

Born in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Bethel F. and Onie

K. Alcon and the oldest of their six children. Her family moved from the farm to Gibsonville where her parents went to work in the mill, while she helped take care of the younger children. She graduated from Gibsonville High School.

In 1944, she married Charles A. Wyrick, who would be her husband of nearly 70 years. Her life revolved around her church and her role as loving caregiver to her siblings, parents, husband, children and grandchildren. After Charles retired, he and Audrey enjoyed travelling with friends and neighbors. While they travelled as far as Austria, their favorite destinations were the coast and mountains of North Carolina.

A lifelong member of the Gibsonville Christian Church, she served as Youth Leader, Sunday school teacher, including more than 20 years in the Danieley Bible Class, and church secretary. She sang in the church choir, belonged to the Ladies’ Fellowship, and delivered Meals on Wheels in the Gibsonville area.

Audrey is survived by her children, Karen Garrison and husband Steve of Burlington, Jo Hepler and husband Charlie of Greensboro, Lynn Wyrick and wife Maureen Basedow of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Survivors also include her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Taylor Garrison and partner Anne Polesnak of Raleigh, Logan Garrison and fiancé Reuben Savits of Astoria, NY, Andrew Hepler and wife Carolyn, and their children, Callie and Cayden of Chattanooga, TN; Arthur Hepler and fiancée Meagan Clark of Saratoga Springs, NY; and Steven and Tess Wyrick of Cincinnati, OH.

Also surviving are Audrey’s sister, Faye A. Kowalczuk; and brother-in-law, Bill McBride; as well as 16 nieces and nephews and their families.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and brothers, Elwood Alcon, Ray Alcon, Wilbur Alcon and their spouses; sister, Opal McBride; and one niece, Sherry Alcon.

The family is especially grateful to the staff of Homecare Providers for their professional and compassionate care for over four years for both Charles and Audrey. Very, very special thanks go to Katie Stanfield, Verga Sterling, Brenda Jones, and Helen Hogsed, who were Audrey’s friends as well as caregivers.

The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home, 2205 S. Church Street, Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.

The funeral service will be conducted at Gibsonville Christian Church on Friday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. followed by interment in Alamance Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gibsonville Christian Church, 325 Burke Street, Gibsonville, NC 27249 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
