SUMTER, S.C. — Earlene Virginia Rudd Burke, 71, entered the church triumphant Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 following a brief struggle with Alzheimer’s at Covenant Place in Sumter, S.C.
Born in Burlington, N.C., Earlene was the daughter of Charlie and Inez Rudd and the wife of 52 years of Raymond L. Burke. Earlene was a graduate of Williams High School and retired from many years of service as a cloth designer, banker, real estate salesperson and lastly as a secretary at Alamance County Community College. She was a member of Sumter First Presbyterian Church where her son-in-law is the pastor.
An avid seamstress and quilter, Earlene enjoyed making gifts for her family. Earlene and Raymond enjoyed their retirement home in Myrtle Beach. They especially appreciated times spent walking together on the beach, riding bikes and dining along the strand with friends. Earlene was a hard worker, always giving her best quietly and sweetly behind the scenes. She and Raymond have one daughter, Angie B. Durrett, of Sumter, S.C. with whom they lived the last two years until Alzheimer’s forced her to receive nursing care.
Preceded in death by her father, Charlie Rudd; and her grandson, Stephen Burke Rice (Oct. 2009), she is survived by her mother, Inez Rudd (94); her roommate and fellow Alzheimer’s sufferer at Covenant Place. Also surviving are her brother, Charlie Wilson Rudd Jr. and his wife Mary of Chandler, Ariz. and their three children Alex, AJ, and Abby; her husband Raymond Burke; daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Mark and Angie Durrett of Sumter; and her grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Durrett (Emily) and Ned Durrett of Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct 29 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mark E. Durrett officiating. The family will receive friends following the church service in the church parlor and cards may be sent to the home, 405 Veranda Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
Glory be to God for all blessings and the family expresses their thanks especially to the staff at Covenant Place and Tri-County Hospice along with friends and family who have loved and supported us through many faith-molding times.
