 BURLINGTON — Mr. Edgar “Van” Poteat, 65, died at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, after a brief illness.
 
 He was a native of Burlington and was educated in Burlington City Schools, graduating from Walter Williams High School in 1967. He was the son of Edgar F. Poteat and Joyce Simpson Poteat, both deceased.
 
 In his early years, he worked and managed life guard beach services at Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was a graduate of Kings Business College, Greensboro, N.C. Van was a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge.
 
 Currently Van was working part time for Alamance County ABC Organization. He was also an active member of the Burlington Red Cross Chapter, a member of the Emergency Response Team and Commissioner on the Burlington Housing Authority. In recent years, he had been active in Republican politics in Alamance County and North Carolina. He was a longtime volunteer at the Caring Kitchen and a member of Lowe Memorial Baptist Church
 
 Surviving are one brother, Robin “Rob” Poteat and wife Karen of Fort Worth, Texas; one son, Christopher Adams and wife Lindsey of Anniston, Ala.; granddaughter, Caylia Adams; two grandsons, Logan and Madden Adams; two nephews, Zachary Poteat of Austin, Texas and Kevin Chapman of Fort Worth, Texas; two nieces, Rachel Poteat of Wichita, Kansas and Kristen House of Fort Worth, Texas; two uncles, Houston Poteat and wife Ruby of Providence, N.C. and Dean Simpson and wife Bernice of Burlington; and one aunt, Margaret Revis of Graham; numerous
 
others cousins and extended family members; and Donna Reel Phillips (His Love) of Charlotte N.C.
 
 The family offers specials thanks to the staff at Alamance Regional Medical Center, Alamance Healthcare Center and Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell. My personal thanks is extended to George and Beverly Coleman, Tom Manning, Cindy Rudd and Phyllis Grigg for daily watches.
 
 The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Bill Gindlesperger. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
 
 The family will receive friend at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
 
 Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 511 West Davis Street, Burlington, NC 27215; to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215; or to Lowe Memorial Baptist Church, 1712 West Webb Ave., Burlington, NC 27215.
