Clarence C. Matkins
GIBSONVILLE — Mr. Clarence C. Matkins , 86, of 6122 N.C. 87 North, Gibsonville, died at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 2 p.m. following a brief illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of 67 years to Louise King Matkins , who survives, and the son of Lenial Gibbons Matkins Sr. and Lydia Fitch Matkins , both deceased. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II. He was a retired draftsman with Western Electric Company and Bell Labs. He was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he was a member and teacher of the Adult Sunday school class, a choir member, and a member of the Methodist Men’s Club. He was a member of the Altamahaw Ossipee Civitan Club and Fiesta Dance Club. He enjoyed hobbies such as farming, genealogy, and flying.
In addition to the wife of the home, survivors include, four daughters, Mrs. Jo Ann Nash and husband, Luther II, Mrs. Becky Joyce and husband, Leon, Mrs. Barbara Williams and husband Richard, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Carol Apple and husband, Ronald, of Elon; seven grandchildren, Nick Harris, Ann Donnelly, Emily Harris, Heather Wilson, Nicole Wilkerson, Natalie Apple, and Allison Apple; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ila M. Terrell of Gibsonville, Mrs. Lois Brannock and husband, James, of Burlington, and Mrs. Gloria DeMarra and husband, Jack, of Burlington; and a nephew, Jerry Matkins , with whom he worked and had a special relationship for many years.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Coy Matkins , Worth Matkins , L. G. Matkins Jr., Leonard F. Matkins , and Norris Matkins ; and one sister, Mrs. Annie M. Barker.
The funeral will be conducted at Shiloh United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 11a.m. by the Rev. Richard Dawson, and Dr. Guy Soule. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times they will be at the residence.
