GRAHAM — Mr. Walter Freeman Smith, 86, of 957 Woody Drive, Graham, died at Peak Resource-Alamance on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013 following several years of declining health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late MaryWoody Smith and son of Andrew Lee Smith and Florence Heritage Smith, both deceased. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. Walter retired from Bell South and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of Graham Presbyterian Church.
Walter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Smith Rimer and husband Curt of Mebane; special granddaughter, Heather Smith and significant other John Hammond Jr. of Graham; daughter, Kathy Smith Cain and husband Jerry of Sophia; son, Terry Lynn Smith and wife Paula of Springboro, Ohio; grandchildren, Drew Smith, Fiona Smith, Wyatt Smith and Michael Rimer; stepgrandchildren, Johnathan Arnold, Darrell Cain, Teresa Cain, Bernece Cain, Denise Cain and Tammy Cain; great-grandchild, Alyssa Hammond; and great-stepgrandchildren,
Ivy Arnold and Noah Dean.
He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Woody Smith; two grandsons, Sonny Dawkins and Kenny Dawkins; and sister, Mildred “Sissy” Woody.
The funeral service will be conducted in the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Thursday, Feb.14, 2013 at 11 a.m. by Dr. Steve Braswell and the Rev. Jeanne Neal, with the family receiving friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. At other times they will be at the residence of Heather Smith, 918 Jill Drive, Graham, N.C.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Graham Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1089, Graham, NC 27253.
