Dr. Lacy Gilbert Hall BURLINGTON — “All men die but few truly live.” This is a loving tribute to a great man who “truly lived.”
Dr. Lacy Gilbert Hall, 80, passed peacefully at his home on Jan. 24, 2014. He was the eternal optimist, teacher, counselor, poet, friend and author with a generous spirit. Born in Alamance County, Lacy was the son of Floyd Douglas Hall and Clara Simpson Hall, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Barbara Boone Hall.
Lacy is survived by his daughter, Cindy Hall Novak and her husband Bill Novak; his sister, Ozel Hall Callahan; two grandchildren, William Stephen Novak IV and Codie Novak Wiley and her husband Joseph Wiley; and two great-grandchildren.
Lacy was a devoted scholar and natural athlete, excelling in boxing winning the 1949 NC Golden Gloves State Welterweight Championship and has been inducted into the Carolina’s Boxing Hall of Fame. He received baseball scholarships to Elon College and UNC-Chapel Hill as well as playing ball while serving in the U.S. Army where he was known for his hitting ability.
Lacy received his undergraduate degree from Elon College, a masters in philosophy from Duke University and a Ph.D in psychology from UNC Chapel Hill. He held a variety of positions over his career as Dr. Hall. Among them were past NC State Director for Employment Counseling, Director of Testing for the Armed Services in Wisconsin, Director of Counseling with Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii, and Director of Counseling for the Peace Corps in Key West, Florida. Lacy was a compelling lecturer who easily motivated his audience while serving as professor at Winston State University, A&T University and UNC State University.
Lacy published many articles in professional journals
and several books. His greatest achievement as an author is the Hall Career Inventory which has been published in 16 countries.
Lacy was a master landscaper, gardener, and maintained his own vineyards to make wine. He frequently visited friends bringing bottles of wine, fl owers, and vegetables from his garden. He worked as an actor for local TV commercials and print advertisements.
Lacy was a co-founder of the Tom Sawyer Huck Finn Tennis Classic which benefi ted local organizations including Elon Home for Children, Boy Scouts and Elon University tennis endowments.
Lacy was a strong passionate visionary who loved people and had a heart of gold. His spirit and love touched everyone who knew him and he will be deeply missed by all. There will be a celebration of his life at his home next month.
Lacy proudly served in the U.S. Army. His grandson William serves in the U.S. Air Force and his granddaughter’s husband Joseph serves in the U.S. Army. He wished for donations to be made to the Wounded Warriors in lieu of fl owers.
