Bobby Q. Rice
MEBANE — Mr. Bobby Q. Rice, age 73, of 7823 Lebanon Road, Mebane, N.C., passed away Monday, January 11, 2010, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Mebane, he was the son of the late William Taft Rice and the late Annie Bell Rice and was married for 54 years to his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Jo Oakley Rice who survives.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gearline Paulette.
Bobby graduated from Mebane High School where he was a star athlete earning honorable mention All-State honors in 1954. He worked for many years with Byrd Food Stores and was owner and operator, with his wife, of Kiddie Kare Day Care Center in Mebane. He attended Lebanon United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Trustees, Lay Leader, Pastor Parish Relations Committee and in many other capacities. He was instrumental in forming the Mebane Coaches Association in 1968 and served on the first Mebane Recreation and Parks Commission created in 1969. He was dedicated to serving the Mebane Recreation Department as a football coach for many years and was inducted into the Mebane Recreation Department’s Hall of Fame in 1998. He touched the lives of many young men as their coach and friend. He had a tremendous love of sports and teaching young men the joy of playing the game and sportsmanship.
Mr. Rice is survived by his wife of the home; seven children, Barney Rice and his wife Donna of Mebane, Billy Rice and his wife Marie of Burlington,
Timmy Rice and his wife Marcy of Farnham, Va., Tammy Robertson and her husband Mike of Burlington, Steve Rice and his wife LeslieofBurlington,MaryBeth Evans of Graham, JeanellWard of Mebane; 15 grandchildren, Brent Rice, Lindsay Hunt, Heath Fausel, Grant Rice, Stewart Rice, Jon Robertson, Stacy Robertson, Connor Rice, Colby Rice, Isaac Rice, Sydnie Rice, Leslie Evans, Kyle Evans, Benny Ward, Heather Ward; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Fausel and Christopher Hunt; three sisters, Doris Franklin, Morine Mills, Jean Fox and her husband Morris; one brother, Donald Rice and his wife Priscilla; many nieces and nephews; and a very special companion, Jasper.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, at Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Reverend Ray Teague. Interment will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Mc-Clure Funeral Service in Mebane and at other times they will be at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lebanon United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6101 Lebanon Road, Mebane, N.C. 27302.
