BURLINGTON - George Washington Garland, 98, of Alamance Plaza in Burlington went to be with the Lord on February 8, 2017 after several weeks of failing health.
Born in Beulahdean NC in 1918, he grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee before serving in the US Army and moving back to North Carolina where he married, worked, and raised his children.
He retired from Graham Furniture Mart, after which he sold fruit during the summer near the Graham post office for many years.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Mozelle Somers Garland, as well as his parents, siblings and his son, Jody Garland of Burlington.
He is survived by his daughters, Vickie Garland of Greensboro, Denise Garland of Burlington, and Tracy Garland Stalker (David) of Burlington, as well as granddaughter Karen Jaycee Hunter of Burlington, and several much loved nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his former wife, Barbara Holland Garland, who was an invaluable friend to him in his final years.
A member of Bible Baptist Church of Burlington, he truly loved his church family and was always grateful for how the Lord had blessed him with such good health, and such a long life.
His funeral service will be conducted by Dr. J. Mark Aheron and George's nephew, Rev. George Hall of Johnson City TN and take place at 12 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Bible Baptist Church in Burlington.
Visitation will immediately precede the service at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
Rich & Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham is assisting the family.
