Tyra Lynn Ross
August 8, 1951 ~ April 10, 2023
71 Years Old
Tyra Lynn Ross, 71, of Burlington, NC, went Home to the Lord on Easter Monday, April 10, 2023.
The daughter of William “Bill” Franklin Ross, Jr. and Mildred Bare Ross, Tyra learned by example a love of the Lord, family, and friends resulting in a lifetime of support and service to troubled youth and others.
Tyra graduated from Walter M. Williams High School and East Carolina University. She served as Lead School Social Worker and retired from the Alamance Burlington School System where she was awarded North Carolina Social Worker of the Year in 2001, became Director of the Family Resource Center at Grove Park Elementary School, and served countless students and families over her 38-year career. She was an active member of the educational sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, whose focus is to build Educational Excellence, Altruism, and World Understanding through fellowship.
Tyra’s childhood love of outdoor adventures and propensity for building elaborate tree houses evolved to playing volleyball, tennis, and water sports in her adult years and an affinity for camping and travel. On summer breaks, she hit the road to Florida and other beach, mountain, and lake destinations with family and dear friends. Some of her favorite travel highlights include accompanying her parents on trips to Europe, two visits to Israel, a mission trip to Haiti, and an epic camping and whitewater rafting expedition in the Grand Canyon.
Currently a member of the Burlington Assembly of God, she previously and faithfully attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Burlington. Tyra grew up in the Davis Street United Methodist Church where she found her love of the Lord and was an active participant and officer of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Over time, she continued to demonstrate her gift of service to the Church as Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at Elon Community Church. Tyra hosted her own teen Bible study where she was a Christian mentor to the youth of families who remain friends to this day. She chaperoned this group on annual camping trips to the Son Festival in Myrtle Beach where they experienced Christian speakers and music groups. She loved to play guitar and sang with the New Directions.
Predeceased by her parents and great-nephew, John Russell Stancil, III, Tyra leaves to cherish her memory six siblings: Wanda Ross Stancil of Raleigh (sons Russ and Callie); William “Trip” Franklin Ross, III of Burlington; Billie Ross Alberts of Farmington, CT (spouse Mark and children William and Natalie); Robert Franklin Ross of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Jeffrey Ned Ross of Aldie, VA (son Alex) and Amber Ross Myers of Raleigh (daughter Lily Kathryn); as well as a great-nephew; a great-niece; two great-great-nephews; beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins; special loved ones, Stacy Whitfield and children Nathan, Jacob, and Morgan; and many cherished lifelong and family friends.
A Celebration of Life and reception will be held at 4pm on Friday, April 14 at Burlington Assembly of God after an 11am graveside service at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will also receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday, April 13 at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Tyra’s name to your favorite youth ministry organization or the Burlington Assembly of God. 261, Tyra Lynn Ross
