Burlington

Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Rainey, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at her residence.

She was born in Orange County on January 7, 1942 to the late Robert Jennings Smith and Barnette Wilson Smith and was the wife of 62 years to Harold Dean Rainey of the home.

Libby was a longtime member of Union Ridge Church.

She was employed with Rouse, Holt and Flora as an office manager for many years and was a licensed insurance agent.

She was also a member of the Red Hat Club where she cultivated many friendships. Libby enjoyed the beach, often vacationing at Oak Island with her family. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and was a dog lover. Most of all, Libby cherished time with her family. A devoted "cheerleader" for her grandchildren, she made it a point to never miss an activity whenever it was possible for her to attend. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Dean; sons, Brian Rainey and wife Deanna Pope-Rainey, Michael Rainey and wife Lisa and her grandchildren, Camden Rainey, Jackson Rainey and Addison Rainey.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jennings “Jimmy” Wilson Smith.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Union Ridge Church with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 – 1:45 prior to the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alamance County Meals on Wheels, 411 West 5th St, Suite A, Burlington, NC 27215 or to the charity of your choice.
