Mrs. Margaret  Joanne Propst Matkins
RALEIGH — Mrs. Margaret  Joanne Propst Matkins  died Thursday, November 10, 2005, at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, NC, following a critical illness of three days. She was 35.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., she was born January 14, 1970, to Ronald Hal Propst  and Madge King Propst  (now deceased). She married Richard Lewis Matkins  on April 3, 2004. A graduate of Garinger High School in Charlotte, she was member of the Honors Society and played on the tennis team. She also was a Girl Scout. She graduated from N.C. State University, Raleigh, in 1992 with a BA degree, and an M.Ed degree in 2002. She was a National Board certified teacher. During Margaret’s  twelve years as a teacher at Broughton High School in Raleigh, she taught French and Social Studies, coached the swim and dive teams, and advised the Student Council. Earlier this year, she was nominated for the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Wake County PTA Council, and was named the 2005 Teacher of the Year for Broughton High School. Margaret  was recognized last spring for a decade of leadership and service to Youth and Government by the YMCA of the Triangle.
Margaret’s  love, enthusiasm, and generosity reached far and wide, particularly among young people. When she was not teaching, motivating, and inspiring students in and out of the classroom, Margaret  impacted many as camp counselor and summer swim coach. Those she taught and coached will long remember moments of gentle encouragement, profound compassion, and sincere joy. Her ability to develop deep and lasting relationships touched all who were fortunate enough to come into contact with her. Margaret’s  giving spirit united multitudes of friends and loved ones, all of whom learned to share more completely, serve more willingly, and love more deeply.
Margaret  is survived by her husband, Richard Matkins ; her father, Ron Propst  of Charlotte; brother and sisterin-law, Mark and Kim Propst  of Belmont, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Wendy Propst  of Asheville, N.C.; sister, Cindy Propst  of Highlands, N.C.; parents-in-law, Don and Ruth Matkins  of Burlington, N.C.; sister-in-law, Susan Matkins  King and husband, Jeff of Mooresville, N.C.; nephews, Michael Propst , Nathan Propst , Ben Propst , Bryant King; nieces, Caitlin Propst , Hayden Propst ; and greatniece, Juliana Ollis.
