Gurney Duckworth, Jr., age 81, of 495 Norman Road, Boone, the Foscoe Community, died September 10, 2014, at his home.

Gurney was born April 5, 1933 in Avery County. He was the manager, for 14 years, of the Western Steer Restaurant in Boone and a member of Grace Baptist Church. Gurney served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict.

Gurney is survived by his wife, Martha Norman Duckworth of the home; one son, Ronnie Duckworth and wife Debbie of Banner Elk; three daughters, Barbara Blair of Elk Park, Melissa Munday and husband Terry of Creston, and Brazilla Norris and husband Wade of Boone; nine grandchildren, Deanna Eirich and husband Steve, Daniel Duckworth, Vanessa Ward and husband Ricky, Bobby Blair and fiancée Misty, Amanda Munday, Jared Munday, Jeremy Munday, Rebecca Norris and fiance Michael Hardy, and Jessica May and husband Ben; nine great-grandchildren, Emily Ward, Logan Blair, Skylar, Kara, and Allie Blair, Deovion Norris, Addison and Isla Eirich, and Connor Munday; two brothers, Wayne Duckworth and wife Ann, and Ted Duckworth and wife Hilda; two sisters, Mildred Buchanan and husband James, and Wilma Hicks and husband Lee; one sister-in-law, Sue Duckworth, and one brother-in-law, Gene Moser. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Paula Martindale and Mary Moser; one brother, Ray Duckworth, and two grandsons, Joseph Munday and Jacob Norris.

Funeral services were held at Grace Baptist Church in Foscoe, officiated by Reverend Jeff Fox and Reverend Jack Jones. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the U.S. Marine Corp, American Legion Post 130, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, were given at the Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville.
