Jennings “Jimmy” Wilson Smith
August 4, 1938 - January 14, 2026
Jennings “Jimmy” Wilson Smith, 87, of Burlington, NC passed away peacefully at AuthoraCare Hospice Home on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 with his family by his side.
A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Rachel Smith, who survives and the son of Robert Jennings Smith and Barnette Wilson Smith, both deceased. He was a member of Long’s Chapel Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of their home, survivors include a daughter, Alexa Smith Flynt (Bobby Shanklin); son, Randall Jennings Smith (Janna); four grandchildren, Parks Colin Flynt, Ella Elizabeth Smith, Alex Jennings Flynt, and Aniston Jennings Smith; sister, Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Rainey (Dean); and many loving nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mark Flynt.
Jimmy was a hardworking family man and who loved farming and being a mechanic. He especially loved raising tobacco, and working on various equipment. He spent his life farming and providing for those he loved. An enthusiast of all things mechanical, he spent his happiest hours with his cars, boats, and motorcycles. He was known throughout the community for his selfless nature and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. Jimmy’s greatest legacy, however, was his 65-year marriage to the love of his life, Rachel, whom he met when they were just 18 years old.
The funeral service will be conducted at Long’s Chapel Christian Church on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. by Pastor David Wood with the family receiving friends from 2:00 until 3:15 p.m. prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A special thanks is extended to his caregivers, Josette Burnette and Shanetta Graves for the wonderful care and love they provided to Jimmy and his family.
Memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Hospice, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Long’s Chapel Christian Church, 2364 N NC Highway 49, Burlington, NC 27217.
