Burlington – Norma Jean Smith Oakley, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2022 surrounded by her daughters. She was born on October 25, 1935 in Caswell County to the late Coy Thomas Smith and Nellie McKinney Smith, and was the wife of 65 years to the late JamesWilliam Oakley.
Norma retired after 45 years with Glen Raven Mills. She was a member of Shallow Ford Christian Church; she enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, especially her favorites were chocolate pies, fried apple pies, pound cakes and brownies. Most of all Norma loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna Cheryl Oakley andWendy Faith Oakley; grandchildren, Lauren Carden Evans, Sydney Ward Sidon and husband Jimmy, Will Gaston Carden and significant other Sarah Scott; great grandchildren, Breanna Evans, Lily Sidon and Charlotte “Charlie” Sidon; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a son, James Craig Oakley and a brother, Earl C. Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Shallow Ford Christian Church by Rev. Steve Regan with burial to follow at BushArbor Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm to 1:45pm Sunday prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence. You may come by Lowe FuneralHome & Crematory on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm to view Norma and watch the video.
