BURLINGTON — Robert A. Herndon , age 86, of 1316 Rayon Street, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Caswell County, and the husband of 63 years to Brona Smith Herndon , who survives.
Robert retired from Lucent Technologies after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 9th Division Service Battery with the 3rd Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a member of Bethel Christian Church and a former deacon of the church. Robert enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Brona Smith Herndon of the home; sons and daughter-inlaw, Robert Wayne Herndon of New York, New York, Donnie L. and Suzanne Herndon of Burlington; grandson and spouse, Robert Chad Herndon and his wife, Christy, of Burlington; great-granddaughter, Hailey Herndon ; sisters, Sue Lawson of Atlanta, Georgia and Vera Helms of Valdese, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi Edmond and Sallie Bett Dameron Herndon ; two sisters; and three brothers.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church by the Rev. Barry Lane, and the burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., and other times at the home.
