Wilbur  Gwynn Chandler  Sr.


    YANCEYVILLE — Wilbur  Gwynn Chandler  Sr., 76, of 1311 Oakview Loop Road, died Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at Hospice of Alamance following a long period of declining health.
    He was born in Caswell County on August 4, 1930, to the late Dewey Otis Chandler  Sr. and Emma Stanfield Chandler . He was a tobacco farmer all of his life and served on the Board of Caswell County ASCS. He was named Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year in 1964 for his contributions to tobacco farming. He was a member and past president of the Southern Caswell Ruritan Club. He also served our country as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War as a machine gunner. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
    The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 2006, at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Phil Kelly, and Bob Hillman. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
    Survivors are his wife, Mary Joyce Slaughter Chandler  of the home; two sons, Wilbur  "Sonny" Chandler  Jr. and wife, Cindy, and Anthony Reed Chandler  and wife, Karen, all of Yanceyville; sisters, Dorothy Harris of Chatham County and Ruby Stephens of Snow Camp; two brothers, D.O. Chandler  Jr. of Yanceyville and Joe Chandler  of Asheville; and three grandchildren, Dawn, Phillip, and Mary Beth Chandler .
    The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Harrelson Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
