Robert Gordon Bennett
BURLINGTON — Mr. Robert Gordon Bennett, 89, of the Village at Brookwood, Burlington, died at his residence on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.
A native of Brantford, Ontario, he was the husband of the late Lurline McKinney Bennett and the son of Albert Bennett and Florence Ratcliffe Bennett, both deceased. Growing up in Dearborn, Mich., he was a high school springboard diving champion at Fordson High School and served as a diving instructor at the Burlington and Graham City Pools. Mr. Bennett was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps. During World War II, he was stationed in England as a B-24 pilot, 8th Air Force, 491st Bomb Group and flew 31 missions over France and Germany. Following his military career, he was a member of a flying club at the Fairchild Airport where he taught flying. He was a retired engineering associate at Western Electric. After retirement, he worked as an electrician’s assistant in Kure Beach. Robert was a former member of the Town Council at Kure Beach. He was a member of the Cape Fear Chapter of the Eastern Star and a Past Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star, Battle of Alamance Chapter. He was a member of the Federal Point Masonic Lodge and was attending with intention to transfer to the Thomas M. Holt Lodge in Graham. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, a Past Master Mason and designer of the Thomas M. Holt Lodge building. Mr. Bennett was a member of Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and served as Treasurer and was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Graham.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Bennett Byrd and husband Robert of Burlington; a son, John A. Bennett of Durham; a brother, Albert H. Bennett of Nevada; two grandchildren, Jonathan S. Bennett and Kristine M. Bennett; and a daughter-in-law, Rita Bennett, all of Wilson.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilynn Bennett Brooks and a sister, Olive Reeves.
The funeral service will be conducted at Graham Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Amanda C. Anderson. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. and at the parlor of Graham Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 10 to10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
