Minnie Lea Kernodle Smithey


    ELON, N.C. — Minnie Lea Kernodle Smithey, age 88, formerly of Elon Ossipee Road, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at White Oak Manor. She was a native of Alamance County and the wife of the late Clyde Milton Smithey Sr.
    Minnie Lea retired after 40 years from Burlington Industries, J. Spencer Love Plant. She was a longtime member of Altamahaw Baptist Church and a former member of the choir. Minnie Lea taught Sunday School and worked in the church day care for many years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her faithfulness to her family and her Lord will be a living testimony to all who knew and loved Minnie Lea.
    Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Woody Montgomery, of Denton, and Peggy and Vernon Moore, of Gibsonville; sons and daughter-in-law, David and Diane Smithey, of Efland, and C. Milton Smithey Jr., of Gibsonville; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Edith Rudd, of Elon; and a brother, Melvin Kernodle, of Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; parents, Walter Lawrence and Bertha Loy Kernodle; and brothers, Leonard and Wilbur Kernodle.
    The funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Walter Jones and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of the granddaughter, Shari Gray on Dorsett Street in Burlington.
