Alvin George "Dempsey" Curtis, 68

Funeral services for Alvin George "Dempsey" Curtis, 68, Route 5, Ava, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Clinkingbeard Chapel with Harlin Howerton officiating. Burial was in Souder Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of rural Ava, Mr. Curtis died at 11:45 p.m. January 18, 1998 at the VA hospital in Columbia.

He was retired from Brown Shoe Factory. Mr. Curtis loved to squirrel hunt, cut wood and farm.

Born Feb. 22, 1929 at Rockbridge, he was the son of Fred and Elizabeth Stone Curtis. He married Edith Alene Hodges on Sept. 13, 1950.

Surviving are one son, Gilbert Curtis, Ava, one sister, and her husband, Betty and Bill Bass, Strafford and two grandchildren, Janetta Zimmer and husband, Michael, Clarkbridge, Ark., and Chris Curtis, Ava.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Edith.
