Dorothy “Dot” Ireland Garber Fishel, 91, a resident of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away at Sentara RMH Medical Center June 9, 2015. She had been making her home at White Birch Communities for the past 16 years, where she was very well taken care of.
She was born September 20, 1923, in Graham, North Carolina, and was a daughter of the late Leonard Arnot and Mattie Gibson Ireland.
Dorothy graduated from Alta Mahaw-Ossipee High School and Elon College. She trained as a nurse at Leakesville Hospital in North Carolina and was a railroad nurse for Seaboard Air Line Railroad for a number of years. She moved to Harrisonburg in 1959 and was an operating room nurse for over 40 years at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and retired from full-time work in January 1991, but worked part time until August 1991.
Dorothy was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Mizpah Sunday School Class, Round Hill Garden Club and Operating Room Nurses Association.
She was married twice. On April 29, 1949, she married Kenneth Wayne Fishel Sr., who preceded her in death on January 6, 1973; and on October 21, 1992, she married Ernest Arehart "Jake" Garber, also preceding her in death on October 8, 1998.
She is survived by two sons, Steven E. Fishel of Harrisonburg and Gregory I. Fishel of Darlington, S.C.; a very special friend for many years, Pat Hughes of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren; one sister, Sue Ireland of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepson, Jeffrey Scott Garber of Weyers Cave; and two stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Fishel Jr.; two sisters, Elouise Gourly and Betty Hancock; and two brothers, James H. Ireland and L.A. Ireland Jr.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Lindsey Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2015, at the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Hay. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
