Deborah Huffman
Deborah Gilmore “Debby” Huffman, of 510 North Peacehaven Road, Winston-Salem, NC, died December 26, 2015, after a short battle with cancer.
A native of Burlington, North Carolina, Debby is survived by her husband of forty-three years, William Howard “Bill” Huffman, Jr, her daughter Christina Lee Huffman of Greensboro, and her brother Gurney Robert “Bobby” Gilmore,
Jr.of Greensboro.
Debby was born January 27, 1950, in Burlington. She attended the Burlington City Schools, including Eastlawn Elementary, Broad Street Junior High, and graduated from Walter
M. Williams High School in 1968. She and Bill were high school sweethearts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gurney Robert Gilmore, Sr. and Inez Coleman Gilmore.
Debby graduated from Catawba College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She taught English in numerous school systems, including Galax, Virginia and in the North Carolina school systems in Nash County, Randolph County, and Forsyth County, retiring from Northwest Middle School in 2002 with thirty years of service.
Debby was raised in Burlington’s First Reformed United Church of Christ. She is a faithful and active member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church of 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, where she loved singing in the choir and participating in the Wednesday morning Women’s Bible Study. She was a member of Circle 8 in the United Methodist Women, serving as circle co-chair and Spiritual Coordinator for the general unit. A highlight of this involvement was her annual attendance with her circle sisters at the UMC Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska. She also worked as both a staff member and volunteer in the church office.
Debby’s other “sisters” were the PedagogyGirls, her Red Hat group of dear friends with whom she taught at Northwest Middle. She also played bridge and loved beach trips with both family and friends. But her highest priority, the role she placed at the top of her list, was that of “Christina’s Mom.” She was a tireless advocate for Christina and for other individuals with disabilities. Annually, Debby and Christina lobbied members of the North Carolina General Assembly during ARC advocacy events. Just this past year, Debby was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the RHA Howell Care Centers.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 11 am at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington.
The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary beginning at 10 am, prior to the service, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church.
