Irene La Von McAlister was born to Roy W. Tromble and Jane "Millie" Howell on September 25, 1925 on a farm at Barnard, Kansas, and died March 14, 1998, at her home in rural Lincoln, Kansas, at the age of 73 years. She grew up on the family farm in the Prairie Grove neighborhood, attending Cottonwood school for the 8 years of Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. She attended Kansas Weslyan University one year then graduated with honors from Texas Western University with a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1962 and New Mexico State University in Las Cruses where she received a Masters in C & I in 1984. She taught school in Texas and New Mexico for 16 years including two years at the Zuni Pueblo and three years in the Bureau of Indian Affairs School with the Navajo children.
During WW II she married Sergeant Robert McAlister and was an Army wife for 43 years. She lived with her family three years in Germany, 1947-49; and three years in Japan, 1952-54.
Two sons were born to this union, Robert Theron Jr. in 1944 and Michael David in 1950.
Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star of Hot Springs, New Mexico, Delta Kappa Gamma of Western State and also Alpha Chi and Pi Delta Kappa, the National League of Penwomen (Artist member) Rio Grand Branch the New Mexico Water Color Society and the Serria Arts Society.
Irene is preceded in death by her father Roy W. Tromble in 1981, and a brother John Merrill Tromble in 1991.
She is survived by her mother Millie Tromble of Lincoln, her two sons Robert Theron McAlister Jr., of Savanna, Georgia, and Michael of Richmond, Virginia; brother: Rev. Gene and wife Evelyn Tromble, of Goodland, Kansas; sisters: Avis and husband Dr. Dane Bruster of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Elma Claire and husband Milton Steinbach of Clay Center, Kansas.
