Mr. E. Ross Phipps
McLEANSVILLE — Mr. E. Ross Phipps, 89, of 1866 Mount Hope Church Road, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs.. Dorothy Coble Phipps, who survives. He was a farmer and was retired from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department, where he was captain of the civil division. He was a member of the retired North Carolina Peace Officers Association and of Alamance Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder and deacon. He served as a 44th combat engineer with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a prisoner of war in Germany, captured in December 1944 and liberated on May 8, 1945, and earned the Purple Heart award. He was a member of the Greater Greensboro Chapter of POWs. He was a former member of the Buena Vista Lodge No. 21 and the McLeansville School Advisory Committee. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in the Colonel John Sloan Camp 290.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs.. Betsy Ramey and Mrs.. Becky Askew, both of McLeansville; a sister, Ms. Effie Whittle of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Paul Phipps of McLeansville; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. William Ross Phipps.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Alamance Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel from 6 to 8 this evening.
