He was the son of Reuben and Mary Harmon Lawrence Cox.

He married Mattie H. Craven on March 27, 1889.

He attended Elon College and was licensed to preach in 1896 and ordained in 1898. He organized and/or built churches in New Lebanon, Greensboro, Reidsville, Monticello and Hopedale, all in North Carolina.

He also served as executive secretary of the North Carolina Christian Conference and as treasurer of Elon College.

He and Mattie had 11 children:Stella Hoffine, Myrtie Sutton, Basil Cox, Neuman Cox, Lenneous Cox, Fleta Black, Alta Washburn, Walter Cox, Woodrow Cox, Mattie Ward, William Cox.
