HIGH POINT- William Elisha Simmons Jr., 83, of 1241 Kensington Ave., died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at High Point Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Christ United Methodist Church by Dr. Glenn L. Myers Jr., and the Rev. Jerry Juren. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1920, in Caswell County to Hattie Hill Simmons and William Elisha Simmons Sr. He was affectionately known as "W.E." He moved to High Point with his family as a young boy and had been a resident for 78 years. W.E. attended High Point High School and was a graduate of Bryce Business College. He retired in 1985 as manager for Durham Life Insurance Company after 30 years of service and was a long time member of Life Underwriters. He was a charter member of College Village Methodist Church, now Christ United Methodist Church where he was a very active member and held many positions including president of the Methodist Men, a member of the Bill Wood Sunday School Class, the building committee, administrative board, finance committee, and Sunday school superintendent. Until recently, he was a regular driver for Mobile Meals and was a supporting member of the Hospital Guild. He was also former chairman of the Guilford County Nursing Home Advisory Committee. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Arkansas and received several commendations for his military service in Asia, Europe, and the Philippines.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A kind and compassionate man who loved people. Until his health declined, he was an avid mall walker who enjoyed the social time as much or more than walking. He was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Oak Hollow Mall". On April 21, 1946, he married Helen Meredith and passed away just three days before their 58th wedding anniversary.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Simmons of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Liz Simmons of High Point; a beloved granddaughter, Cynthia Simmons of High Point; a brother and his wife, Andrew and Marguerite Simmons of High Point; a sister, Virginia Simmons Carper of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Henry Hobson of Rockledge, Fla. ; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Inez Simmons Hobson preceded him in death.
Special thanks to caregivers, Angela Burns and Christine Flynn, the staff, doctors, nurses at the Cancer Center and the 8th floor Restorative Care Unit at High Point Regional Hospital. Their care and concern provided great comfort to the family.
Visitation will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the residence.
