Emery Hooper Harris
BURLINGTON — Mr. Emery Hooper Harris, 66, of 2714 West Front Street, Apt. D1, Burlington died suddenly at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 5:15 p.m.
Mr. Harris, born in Winona, Miss., was the second of five children born to James Nimrod Harris, Sr. and Christine Keziah Hooper Harris, both deceased. For the past 27 years he owned and operated Lakeside Dyeing & Finishing in Burlington, N.C. The company grew over the years to become an extension of his immediate family where Hooper shared many memories and special moments with his employees, suppliers, and customers; most especially, his three children, Nick, Ann, Emily, and Maria Gegen. The company was a fitting example of a life based on the principals of leadership, generosity, and compassion for others.
First and foremost, Hooper was a loving and gracious father who was committed to building a strong foundation of success and pride to share with his children and grandchildren. Whether that meant never missing a company payroll for his employees, providing an opportunity for someone who needed a second chance, or simply by setting an example as a successful businessman in a challenging textile industry, Hooper treated each day as an opportunity to make life better for others, despite the circumstances.
This foundation began flourishing while attending Altamahaw Ossipee School in Alamance County, N.C. Before graduating in 1962, Hooper received many awards and accolades, including once scoring five touchdowns in one game. Additional achievements on the A.O. athletic fields and classrooms resulted in twice being named All Mid-State Conference Quarterback as a Junior and Senior, lettering as a Four-Star Athlete and Captain of the school’s varsity football and baseball teams, playing two years on the basketball squad, serving as Student Council President, and becoming a member of The National Honor Society.
Continuing his education at North Carolina State University, Hooper majored in Textile Chemistry while receiving a scholarship from Burlington Industries and served as President of the professional knitting fraternity, Kappa Tau Beta. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1967 and was named the Most Outstanding Textile Chemistry Student in his graduating class.
He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church where he served as a Head Usher and taught Sunday school classes. He was a lifetime member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. In recent years, he spent his free time relaxing at the lake and maintaining his rose garden. Hooper touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all.
Survivors include a son, Nick Harris, of Burlington; two daughters, Ann H. Donnelly and husband Patrick of Greensboro and Emily Harris and friend Russ Barbour of Charlotte; three brothers, James Nimrod Harris II and wife Ruthann of Elon, Gary Eugene Harris and wife Marianna of Elon and Lonnie “Lon” Albert Harris and wife Joan of Siler City; one sister, Amy H. Deal and husband Ray of Burlington; and two grandchildren , Ian and Emma Donnelly.
The memorial service will be conducted at Front Street United Methodist Church on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Marshall Old and Dr. Jack Hunter. The family will greet friends following the service in the Heritage Room at the church. They will also be at the home of Nick Harris, 2144 Woodland Avenue, Burlington on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. A private burial service will be held at Alamance Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the May Memorial Library, 342 South Spring Street, Burlington, N.C. 27215 or to a charity Hooper actively supported, Team In Training, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 310, White Plains, N.Y. 10605 or ( http://pages.teamintraining. org/nc/corps10/eharriskzg ).
