John Franklin May was born on August 15, 1878. Son of John M. May and Helen Elizabeth White. His exact record of birth was unknown until the recent discovery of his WWI Draft Registration record. John married Mary Magnolia McHargue Bennett sometime after 1911 and was still married to her at the time of his death. He may have been married to someone else prior to this marriage but we have yet to find verification of that, or that he ever had any children. John was an Electrician by trade and was killed on August 7, 1933 at 9:30 PM after being "crushed" by the Southern Railroad Train. The Guilford County Coronors' office ruled his death a "possible suicide". This was during the very worst years of the Depression and there were a relatively high number of suicides among men (particulary in the South) due to severe economic distress and high numbers of skilled laborers unable to find work to take care of their families.
