Ellen "Mary Elizabeth" White was born in August 1851. She was married to John M. May in 1874. Her first child (Carmina) was born in 1876 but did not survive to adulthood. She and John later had the folling children, John Franklin May (1878-1933); Joseph Levi May (1880-1959); William Alexander May (1886- unknown); and Lilley Bell May Anthony (1890-1972).

John M. May was the son of Simon May (b. 1816) and Peggy (born 1817-unknown maiden name). In 1874, he married Ellen Mary Elizabeth White (born 1851). While this headstone shows his date of birth as 1948, it is an error. We have numerous census records between 1880 and 1920 showing John's actual date of birth as 1936. John and Ellen had four children who survived to adulthood. They were John Franklin (1878-1933); Joseph Levi (1889-1959); William "Alec" Alexander (1886-unknown); and Lilley Bell (May) Anthony (1890-1972). Although John was widowed in 1910, the 1920 census shows him as "head of household" with his two sons (Joseph & William Alexander) and their wives (Ferrell and Laura) plus all of the grandchildren living with him in Greensboro. He passed away at the age of 85 after a brief illness (July 7, 1921).
