Joseph Levi May was born in March 1880, to parents John M. May and Ellen Mary Elizabeth White May.
In 1907, he married Alpha Rainey (born 1887). Alpha was the daughter of John N. Rainey and Salley Lashley).
Joseph Levi and Alpha Rainey May were living in Guilford County near Greensboro on the 1910 Census.
By 1910, they had a son, Clarence, who was two years old.
On January 12, 1912, Alpha Rainey May gave birth to a baby girl, Lillian V. May. However, their infant daughter only survived for 16 days. Sadly, she died on January 28, 1912.
Then, just 9 months after losing their baby daughter, Joseph's wife, Alpha, died on October 15, 1912.
Joseph later remarried a woman named Ferrell May (born 1893-unknown maiden name).
Joseph and Ferrell had two daughters together. Vivian, born in 1914, and Jean, born in 1917. The also had a son (David Allen May) born April 26, 1924 - but sadly, he only lived for a brief time, and died on May 27, 1924.
Joseph died in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina in 1959 and he is buried in Green Hill Cemetery (Guilford County) near his first wife Alpha Rainey, whom he had lost in 1912, and his second wife, Ferrell...and the two children that had been lost in infancy.
