Mabel Gorbett
Mabel M. Gorbett, the sister of Nashville resident Madge Smith, died Thursday, February 6, 2003, at Friendship Manor in Pewee Valley. A resident of Kentucky, she was 96.
Born in Jennings County, December 2, 1906, she was the daughter of Franklin and Clara B. Simmons May. Both preceded her in death.
She married Russell E. Gorbett, August 4, 1928, in Jennings County. He died October 6, 1994.
Mrs. Gorbett was a resident of North Vernon for many years and lived at Four Seasons Retirement Center in Columbus before moving to Kentucky.
She was a 1924 graduate of Jackson High School in Decatur County and a 1926 graduate of Indiana Business College. Mrs. Gorbett was a member of First Baptist Church in North Vernon and served as church secretary during the pastorates of the reverends A.E. Lacy and James Hardin.
She had been a member of Business and Professional Women's Club, Homemakers Club and Hospital Guild and was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader for several years, all in North Vernon.
She was an avid collector of Roseville Pottery.
Other survivors include daughters, Karen Stalker of Louisville, Kentucky, Sue Kelley of Germantown, Tennessee, and Gay Schofer of Milford, Michigan; grandchildren, Greg Schofer of Livonia, Michigan, John Schofer of North Vernon and Sarah Kelley of Oakland, California; sisters, Merle Moncreif and Bernice Showers, both of North Vernon, and Augusts Jolly of Altoona, Florida; and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Sandra Gorbett; and a brother, John May.
A service was held Saturday, February 8, at Dove-Sharp and Rudicel Funeral Home with the Revered Evelyn Brown officiating.
Burial was in Vernon Cemetery.
