MRS. THOMAS N. BROWN
The death of Mrs. Thomas N. Brown occured Tuesday morning, July 4, 1933, at her home in east Chariton. She had been in failing health for several years, and in February, 1932, a fall resulted in a broken hip, since which time she has been a helpless invalid, tenderly cared for by a devoted husband and children.
Mary Catherine Shockley, eldest daughter of John and Hannah Shockley, was born in Fulton county, Illinois, January 18, 1857, and at the time of her death her age was 76 years, 5 months and 16 days. In the fall of 1865 she came with her parents by the covered wagon route to Lucas county, Iowa, and with the exception of two years spent in Illinois, this place had been her home. On Jan. 30, 1878, she was united in marriage to Thomas N. Brown, who survives her.
They were the parents of twelve children, two of whom preceded her in death, Raymond, at the age of 16, and an infant son. The living children are Mrs. Maude Holmes, of Lucas; Otis Brown, Mrs. Luella May, James H., and Mrs. Oma Schwartz, of Chariton; Charles, of Reece, Kansas; and Oran, Arthur, Lester and Grace, at home. She also leaves two brothers and a sister, Manuel Shockley, of Enid, Oklahoma; Elmer Shockley, of Ordway, Colorado; and Miss Laura Shockley, of San Francisco, Calif.; twenty grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Brown was one of nature's own sweet spirited gently women whose mission in life seemed to be "To Serve" and she fulfilled that mission faithfully and well. At the age of sixteen years she was bereft of her mother and being the eldest daughter it fell to her lot to assume the responsibilities of the home and to care for her younger brothers and sisters. After her own children had reached mature years a little granddaughter, seventeen months old, now Mrs. Velma Sharp, of near Chariton, was left motherless and she was taken into the home and most tenderly cared for by this good woman. As the multitude of duties presented themselves to her throughout her long life she shouldered them cheerfully and courageously.
She united with the Oxford Methodist Episcopal church in young womanhood and though quiet and unassuming, she always gave full evidence of a beautiful Christian spirit in all her work and relationships in life. During her months of feebleness and decline she was most patient and ever mindful of those about her.
Funeral services, in charge of Rev. O. W. Morrow, were held at the Chariton Methodist church at 2:30 p.m., on Wednesday, with interment in the Oxford cemetery.
