J. H. "Jay" Oliver Jr., 85, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Maryfield Nursing Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph Eanes officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Jay was born on Sept. 19, 1918, to the late Etta and J. H. "Jim" Oliver Sr., in Guilford County. A graduate of Sumner High School, he attended North Carolina State University, where he studied agriculture and poultry science. With WW II looming, he vacated his senior year and entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet program, where he earned his pilot wings and was commissioned as a lieutenant. He became a flight instructor and subsequently qualified as a B-29 aircraft commander. It was at that time that he met and married his beloved Gwen, who became his soulmate for 55 years until her death. He was a lifetime resident of Guilford County, a farmer, a deputy sheriff and a lifetime member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church. He was also an active "life" member of the Sumner Civitan Club and the Guilford County Cattleman's Association.
Survivors include his children, Michael J. Oliver and his wife, Anne of Memphis, Tenn., Sheila Oliver Inman, James H. Oliver III, and his wife, Gail, Shannon H. Oliver and his wife, Cindy, all of Greensboro; sisters and brother, Iris Fields, Ada Burge, Bessie Spivey (deceased), Helen Venable, Betty Jobe, Bill Oliver, Joan Fields; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step grandchildren.
