Joy Payne Walker

Joy Ellen Payne Walker, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family. 

She was born on September 26, 1934 in Alamance County to the late George Anderson Payne and Ava Vestal Payne, and was the wife to the late Anderson Boyd Walker who died in 2016.

Joy retired from Carolina Biological with over 20 years of service.  After retirement she worked at Goody’s Department Store in the mall, then TJ Maxx until 2017. She was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church and most recently attended Altamahaw Baptist Church. She was previously a member of the A.O. Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, working in her flowers, and loved spending time with her family. She will be remembered as Nannie to all her grandchildren and their friends. Joy was one to never leave the house without her lipstick on.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Moore Loye and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Ashley Loye Bason and husband Matt, Brian Bailey (Sophia), Matthew Bailey (Megan); great grandchildren, Dallas and Chandler Bason, Natalie Butler, Paityne and Ashten Callahan; a special niece, Elizabeth Isley Murray (Andy Oliver); a great nephew, Jeremy Murray (Abby), several cousins and special friends.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, Ava Dawn Moore Bailey and a sister, Myrtle Payne Isley.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Bellemont United Methodist Church by Rev. Farron Duncan with the burial to follow at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30pm to 1:45pm prior to the service at the church and other times at the granddaughter, Ashley’s home in Burlington.
The family would like to express their gratitude to AuthoraCare nurses and staff, the staff at the ARMC Cancer Center, and Dr. Sallie Patel at the Charles Drew Center for their compassion and loving care that was shown to Joy during her illness.
