Mr. James Donald Mitchell
BURLINGTON — Mr. James Donald Mitchell, 74, of 1323 Springdale Drive, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home after an illness of one month.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Norma Whitesell Mitchell, who survives, and the son of Mr. Edwin Leffrage Mitchell and Mrs. Berta McIntyre Mitchell, both deceased. He was retired from A&P Food Stores with 36 years of service and later worked for Byrd Food Stores for six years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon. He was president of the Men’s Bible Class, Believers Chorus, administrative council and treasurer of the Methodist Men. Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. David Lynn (Joy) Mitchell of Graham and Mr. Jonathan Wayne (Wanda) Mitchell of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Alva Hoke of Burlington and Mrs. Ruby Starling of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Hill, Mrs. Dorothy Hill and Mrs. Hazel Howell; and two brothers, Mr. Wallace Mitchell and Mr. Joseph Mitchell. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church of Elon by the Rev. Randy Innes, pastor; the Rev. Melissa R. MacKinnon, associate pastor; and the Rev. Bill Wolfe, retired Methodist minister with special remarks by Mr. Marvin King and Mr. Charlie Pyles. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery. Members of the Men’s Bible Class will sit as honorary pallbearers. The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
