John Thomas Wagoner
John Thomas Wagoner, 96, passed away on December 22, 2018.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at St. Mark’s Reformed Church, 1230 St. Mark’s Church Rd., Burlington, NC 27215 with Ben Bishop, Robert and Eric Disher officiating. Visitation will precede from 12:30-1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
John was born in Elon to the late James Franklin and Emma Maude Wagoner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven brothers Hodge, Leslie, Walter, Luke, Vasteen, Bob, Pete, and four sisters, Ethel Barber, Annie Clapp, Ruth Clapp, and Peggy Harrison.
John graduated from Elon High School in 1941 and worked for his father in farming until 1954. He attended Alamance Community College studying electronics and worked as an electrical technician for Western Electric from 1954-1988.
John was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Church, where he served as a Communion Steward, Trustee, Deacon, and Elder. He was honored with the Brotherhood Award in 1987 and the Senior of the Year award in 1991. He was a member of the Christian Worker class and the Older Men’s class. He helped with building the church’s Reformation Hall.
John was a fierce Atlanta Braves and Carolina Tarheel fan. He was passionate about his family, a true role model, and will be remembered for his quick wit. His favorite pastime was gardening, from which he shared vegetables with friends and neighbors every year.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Lucy Clapp Wagoner; daughters Kay Wagoner and husband, Ken May; Margaret Gilliam and husband Steve; Jackie Disher and husband, Eric; grandchildren Stephanie Armand (Phil), Chris May (Melissa), Reid Gilliam (Natalie), Joel Gilliam (Ann), Ashley Godley (Ben), and Lydia Disher; great-grandchildren Samantha and Nicholas Armand, Bryson and Dylan May, Meg Gilliam, and Alexandria Godley.
