Lucy Clapp Wagoner
Lucy Clapp Wagoner, 93, passed away on December 22, 2019.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at St. Mark’s Reformed Church, 1230 St. Mark’s Church Rd, Burlington, NC 27215, with Ben Bishop and Bob Disher officiating. Visitation will precede from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Lucy was born in Guilford County to the late Floyd Evert and Myrtle Frankie Clapp, the eighth of twelve children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Wagoner, who passed on the same date one year earlier, and her six brothers, Luke, Ferry, Kestle, Raymond, Buddy, and June Clapp, and her five sisters, Anne Ellis, Clara Chriscoe, Mabel Wagoner, Agnes Fogleman, and Sue Clubb.
Lucy graduated from Elon High School in 1943. She worked for Standard Hosiery for eight years before going to work for Western Electric, from where she retired in 1983, after 30 years of employment.
Lucy was a member of Brick Reformed Church until she married John, at which time she joined St. Mark’s Reformed, where she served on the Altar Guild and Building Committee, was Secretary of her Sunday School class, Treasurer of her Circle, and served on various boards and committees. She also made communion bread, along with John, for 22 years and co-chaired the Bereavement Committee for eight years. She was awarded the Senior Award at her church in 1992. Lucy was a ‘Pink Lady’ at Alamance Regional Medical Center for five years.
Lucy was passionate about her family. She was a gifted cook and baker, from which her family and friends benefited on a regular basis. She was a fierce proponent of higher education and worked hard to assure that her children and grandchildren went to college. She was extremely sociable, having never met a stranger, and hospitable, always welcoming people into her home. She was talented in needlepoint, having spent a year working on a tapestry for the Prayer Ministry’s kneeling bench at her church in 1999. She was still working at needlepoint till just a few months ago. Like her husband, Lucy had a green thumb and helped him garden each summer, blessing neighbors, friends, and family from the produce. An avid interior decorator, Lucy finished her last project just weeks before passing.
She is survived by her daughters Kay Wagoner and husband, Ken May, Jr.; Margaret Gilliam and husband, Steve; Jackie Disher and husband, Eric; grandchildren Stephanie Armand (Phillip), Christopher May (Melissa), Reid Gilliam (Natalie), Joel Gilliam, Ashley Godley (Ben), Lydia Cockrell (Joel); and great grandchildren Samantha and Nicholas Armand, Bryson and Dylan May, Meg Gilliam, and Alexandria Godley. Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Reformed Church
