Stuart Richard Toms

BURLINGTON – Stuart Richard Toms, 82, of Burlington, died on Monday, August 21, 2017 at Winston Salem Nursing and Rehab Center.

A native of Morristown, New Jersey, he was the husband of Barbara Bivins-Toms, who survives and the son of Nathaniel Stuart “N.S.” Toms and Edna Agnes Lancaster Toms, both deceased.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the 82nd Airborne.
Mr. Toms was a strength coach with Elon College, Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and also with the New York Giants.
He was a three-time world power lifting champion and traveled all over the world competing.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four children, Janet Toms Hundley and husband Stephen of Reidsville, Matthew Stuart Toms and wife Joy of Eden, Rodney Scott Bivins of Ruffin, NC, and Michael Todd Bivins of Mebane; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Nate Toms and wife Becky of Spartanburg, SC; his sister, Natalie Hoffmaster and husband Robert of Melbourne, FL; his first wife and mother of Matthew and Janet, Jean Loy Toms of Elon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his aunt, Irene Lancaster Collins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Rev. Farron Duncan officiating.
Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 23 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington and at other times will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Bellemont United Methodist Church, where he was a member, 4039 Markwood Drive, Burlington, NC 27215.
