Jimmie Douglas “Doug” Simmons
   ELON — Jimmie Douglas “Doug” Simmons, 72, of Cherry Grove Road, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at Annie Penn Hospital.

   He was the husband of the late Norma Troxler Simmons and was born March 2, 1940 in Caswell County to the late Edgar William and Mary Boone Simmons.

   Doug was very active in his community, serving on the Membership Board and current secretary of Piedmont Electric, former Chief and Treasurer of the Cherry Grove Volunteer Fire Department and served as the President of the Cherry Grove Ruritan Club.

   He was a member of Concord Christian Church, serving as the treasurer, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the cemetery committee, deacon, choir director and member for over 60 years. Doug was an avid baseball, softball player and coach. He always had a smile and handshake to share with you and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

   Survivors include his daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Kirby and husband Tony of Elon, Janice Franklin of Elon and companion Chris Apple of Burlington; grandchildren, Claire Kirby, Ben Kirby, Gunner Franklin and Carrie Kirby; sisters, Linda S. Clemmons of Hampton, Va. and Almeria S. Steele of Greensboro.

   He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and a son, Kenneth Craig Simmons.

   The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Concord Christian Church by the Rev. Chuck Hartman and the Rev. Keith Murray. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

   The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. and at other times at the home.
